To compensate for my absence here is an email I just wrote (at 4am) to Kathy, my best friend in Vermont. Grammatical mistakes and all.

Hey Kath,

I've been meaning to call you but everything is so busy (I feel like I've been saying that since the summer!!)

Sean and I are in NY, we just got here late Wednesday night. We were in Philly since last Friday, and had a lot of fun there. His brother is moving to Denver this Saturday, so it was nice for Sean to see him.

Today we went out East to an aquarium.

This is my new best friend -- the sea lion. They LOVE people and loved spending time over by the glass wall with us. It was really amazing how well they responded to everything we did. We got them to flip around and pose for us.

I find it extremely enlightening when you look into the eyes of a species you never really interacted with before and have a mutual understanding. Out of the whole aquarium the place I wanted to be most was by that glass wall that separated us from these incredible beings. And the whole time we were there, they choose to stay inches away from the same wall. This guy specifically responded to every hand movement and really looked into our eyes. Maybe it's just a human condition to inject human emotion into other animals; but the way I felt when I looked at him was much deeper than that.

Driving home from the aquarium someone got mad at us, in Sean's Subaru &threw something at us. Heavy too, maybe a shoe. On the highway. Both vehicles doing 70, and he was the driver. We're not sure why, and saw the same guy earlier driving backwards on the entrance ramp. It was dark and we couldn't see his license plate (and there were 5 of us in the car!) What a nutjob.

To make things crazier, we're pretty sure my friend's baby mama is in labor. She nor her family will pick up any of his phone calls, so I guess we'll have to wait and see.

On a more optimistic note, I signed up for classes at UVM! They won't accept me as an in state student just yet, I still have to go through some things to see if they'll let me qualify. Class starts on the 17th and I'm thinking about suspending my shop for a while. It was really fun, but I don't think I really want to spend time doing it proactively anymore. I've been reading (Magic Hat founder) Alan Newman's book: High On Business. I love it. I know your reading list is long, but I think you would enjoy it.

Tomorrow, Sean and I both have hair appointments. I know, I know, I know, you don't want me to get a haircut. I actually want to keep my hair long, just trim the dead ends.

I miss you. How has everything been? When is Sabian's play? I hope he's enjoying every second of it. I miss you, your beautiful smile, hearing your stories, and just being in your house - around you. I hope you're staying warm; I see it's supposed to drop to -5 degrees Saturday! Yikes.

I still don't have Internet. Moving has been absolutely exhausting but we're finally checked out of the apartment and completely moved into the house. There are boxes in every room. I recently got that bug Sean had a few days ago so I feel like I can sleep all day.

It snowed today, which means it's warmer than it has been around here. Thin white blankets of snow cover the frozen grounds and icy waters. It's beautiful. I wish I could show every one of you what Vermont is like in the winter. This is the Vermont I fell in love with years ago.

Stars as Opportunities

I've been thinking a lot about this post, and have decided that stars are opportunities.

We are always surrounded by opportunities; sometimes our minds are too clouded to see them but most times we're just not looking for them. Sure, there's always the sun: a consistent road, one that flows through every day, our main path. But the sun alone wouldn't bring us the beauty and mystery of the night. The stars, like the road less traveled, leads us into the unknown -- which is mysterious and a little bit scary. They are opportunities to enhance our lives. Sometimes we fail and sometimes we succeed. Either is fine, because it means we're still moving. It means we're still trying new things, learning, growing and living.

We always have opportunities to do something new, but you'll only see them if you open your eyes.

Thanksgiving night I was outside, as cold as it was, and saw a shooting star. My neighbor, Christine, and I both exclaimed, as the other people around us had missed it. Immediately, I texted Sean -- who I was already in the middle of texting. "I saw a shooting star!" "I saw it too! I thought it was a firefly but that wouldn't make any sense with this weather." 150 miles away and we saw the same shooting star.

Most of the people I was with had missed it. But both Sean and I looked up at that same moment, hours away from each other.

Laura, one of the friends I was with, said it's weird to think that the stars she sees in NY are the same ones she sees back home in England. Which reminds me of the times my dad would wake me up in the middle of our redeye flight to Brazil so we could look out the window and see all the northern and southern stars at the same time. Millions of little lights for the flight to enjoy, but most people slept through it.

So many people could have looked up on Thanksgiving and seen that same star, at the time. A pretty little display of light. Then it was gone.

This morning I woke up and this was the view outside our window:

This was the first time I woke up to snow on the ground. For northern Vermont! This is late! We are less than an hour away from Canada !

Anyway, I'm excited, winter is actually here. I haven't been dying for it to arrive (like Sean has, since he skis) and I do love Autumn so I didn't want to wish it away. But winter's here! Which means we can go sledding with Kathy and Sabe. And even though it's cold outside we're fortunate enough to always have a warm place we can be. And it's time for hot chocolate, and warm toast with maple syrup. And I'm not so sure why I'm so excited but, here it is. Sweet winter.

It saddens me that I have not written here in a while. I miss writing here every few days, even if I didn't have anything important to say. Just logging my life or the little things in chronological order.

The holiday season has kept me busy, and for that I am thankful. Finals are creeping up on us and we finally got the keys to our new house! I plan on taking some pics so I can post them here (I hate phone photos!)

Anyway, I hope you are well. I hope that when things get busy you remember to breathe and relax and to set some time aside for you to unwind.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I am so thankful this year; I'm thankful for our health, our hearts and our futures.

I'm thankful that my parents are happy and that Sean's family has welcomed me into their family. I'm thankful that we'll be moving into a cute little house in a few weeks. I'm thankful to be in NY for the week, but also thankful to be living in Vermont. I'm thankful for all my good friends, they make each year easier.

Every year on Black Friday it's been a tradition with me and my neighbors to venture out early to wait online for the shopping chaos. It's more fun to us than anything serious and it's one of my favorite traditions. This year stores are opening at MIDNIGHT, which means we'll have to be cutting our Thanksgiving early (we spend thanksgiving with them too -they're basically family).

This year Black Friday will be exciting for LoveErica too! It's closed right now but I will be reopening it later tonight and listing many more items and will be having a huge sale! More than 100 items will be marked down for an early bird special between 12am-8am tomorrow (Eastern US time!) I never mark prices down that much, but I want to encourage early shopping since december will be a crazy month for us. After 8am tomorrow a regular sale will be going on until Monday.

A little Update.

This week has been incredibly long. We went to Northampton, Massachusetts where we sold at the Twist Craft Fair. I have so many pictures from it and I'll have to tell you all about it, as a friend telling a friend. Right now I'm trying to get online orders out on time and trying to stay sane before Thanksgiving break which starts in a few days. ah! Anyway, I'll write more later. xoxo

How cute is this little girl? A friend is fostering her and 3 of her siblings and I would LOVE to adopt two of them. I'm pretty sure this is what's missing in my life right now. Ah, I can dream.

And good news.....

We found a house! We signed the lease a yesterday! I'm really excited about this and it looks like we're moving in a month. This december is going to be so crazy, but I'm thankful this is our biggest obstacle right now.

We've been so busy; going to Syracuse and helping our friends move, coping with everything that's going on, applying to new colleges, and shopping for a new place to live. There's a lot of things I'm going to ignore while writing this post because I can't stop thinking about living in a house. I know that our apartment now is probably a lot 'nicer' than most of the houses around here because it's new and spacious. But there's something so cozy about small houses with wooden window frames and tiny bedrooms.

I have the craft fair in MA next week. I am not prepared. I haven't even ordered business cards, and definitely do not have much inventory. With everything going on, and being surrounded by life and death - the stress suddenly seems less important. So what if I go to a craft fair and don't make my money back? I'm so thankful to be where I am right now, I'm not going to let something like this ruin things. And note to self: never sign up for another craft fair. I don't like them, now I know.

Anyway, houses. I just can't wait. &the fact that I'll be moving in with Sean just makes it so much better. I know there's times of grey, and this season is darker than most years, but the future is bright and I'm looking ahead.

This weekend has been terribly dreary for me. A dear friend of mine went into labor a few months earlier than anticipated, and unfortunately, the baby didn't survive. We have been grieving with the parents - and letting them know they're loved and supported.

Autumn is really setting in, making way for a colder season. Vermont has transformed into a beautiful canvas of yellows and oranges thick with nostalgia.

Sometimes it really does feel like autumn mourns with us.

Gender Neutral Rings

A closer look at our gender neutral rings.

This one is a hammered half dome ring. It measures 6mm thick and is polished to a luster finish.

&This one is a hammered flat ring, measuring 5mm thick. It's been oxidized and polished to a gloss finish. The sides and inside are oxidized to a charcoal gray - it will lighten as you wear it which adds to the distressed look.

I have a business test tomorrow and have to fill out applications to transfer colleges during the next few weeks. I know I've been only half here, but know that I am doing my best.

New Earrings

This is the first pair of earrings we made with sterling silver. We soldered a bezel cup to a backing and set the stone for a more secure earring.

I love the look of stem earrings - not to mention their practicality since they don't require backings.

I haven't written much because I just keep getting busier! Yes, more jewelry is on it's way!

Lately I've been thinking a lot about unisex jewelry. Specifically earrings and rings. After making these tiny studs I couldn't part with them and have been wearing them ever since. I love them since they're so small &simple.

Sean and I set out to make a unisex ring for a very special customer. We tried two different ways:

My attempt is the one on the left, Sean's on the right. Both are beautiful and gender neutral. We plan on making more thick rings like this in the near future. (&These will be in the shop very soon!)

Actually, I have a bit of a confession. I have more jewelry that I haven't posted yet because I haven't been that successful photographing it. I have a test this week, but after I'm done with that I'm going to try hard to get good pictures for you! (The lighting is best between 1 to 2:30 so I don't have a big time frame.

Today on a walk with my good friend, Kalina, I took this photo. I just love the colors of autumn. I've been trying to incorporate it into my shop, but sometimes that's hard when you work with metals. I've recently decided to mail my earrings out in boxes instead of bubble mailers. It ensures that the earrings will arrive in one piece. (The postal service tends to be rough with packages around the holidays, and this year I don't want to take any chances!)

So, I've decided to wrap my earrings with bright tissue paper. This one's a bit like fire, but I think I'll buy some brown soon and maybe switch it with the red. I love when people open their order and it feels like a present.

&Just so you know, I haven't forgotten about you. I've just been busy.

Brooklyn Folk

This weekend Alix, a dear friends of mine, made it up to Vermont with a few of her friends! She was the only one I knew when I initially met up with them, but immediately I felt like they were all my friends, &I had a lot of fun!

Saturday night we headed down to Vergennes where Alix's aunt, Jan, lives. We headed out to a corn maze at 10pm, where we trashed our boots in the mud (it was brutal!) and tried to find our way through (with the moonlight) before they closed at 11. Towards the end of the hour the group split and Alix &I ended up wandering on our own. With 5 minutes left and our wet socks scrunched up in the middle our feet we stumbled upon the exit - success! The others headed out of an early exit but we triumphed! We were awarded a cookie - and it was delicious.

Then we headed back to Jan's house; she lives in a beautiful house with matching old wooden furniture and 5 kitties! She let us spend the night and was extremely hospitable and welcoming to all of us. We sat by the fire pit in her yard for hours - it was so cold but the fire was so hot. It's strange to be comfortable in the most unbalanced way.

At some point this baby showed up:

A gorgeous black and white kitten - no more than 6 months old. She was quite feisty - growling at the cats who lived there and making her presence known. She already was used to people and never left our sight. So cute - I really wish I could take her in, and would have despite Sean's text, "no cats!" But I really can't make a commitment like that right now; I never know where I'm going to end up. As soon as I'm more settled the first thing I'm going to do is get a kitty. It is first on my list.

I took this photo on one of the last days in September when I went out to Bolton with Kathy. I'm so glad October is here. That means the leaves will be changing, the air will be getting dry and the warm glow of indoor lights in the night will seem even more cozy. October 1st came in at 40 degrees here in Vermont! It's getting real cold, real quick. Almost everyone here is sick with the season changing. Sean's still in bed sleeping (do you know any good remedies for a sore throat?)

Relaxing Bath

Sean's got a nasty cold that he caught from school. So I looked up some bath recipes - found one that we had all the ingredients for already. I just made him a soothing warm bath with candles - where he is relaxing right now. (:

This recipe was really easy, I found it on kitchencraftsnmore.net:

Foaming Vanilla Honey Bath
1 cup oil
1/2 cup honey
1/2 cup liquid soap
1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract

Mix together all the ingredients and pour into a clean bottle with a tight fitting stopper or lid. To use, shake before using. Pour 1/4 cup into the bath under running water. Yields 16 ounces - enough for 8 baths.

I didn't make the whole recipe, I just eyeballed smaller portions for just one bath. It didn't foam in the bath, but it smells nice and feels great on your skin. I used grapeseed oil and all natural Dr Bronner's soap.

Nose Rings

Hi friends!

I'm just starting to silversmith other jewelry besides rings -like earrings and nose rings. Earrings are simple since there's a set standard but with nose rings it's a little bit tricky. I made my first nose ring this morning; my nose is smaller than most so it's been difficult to find a stud that sits flat against my nose the whole day. The one I made this morning is perfect for me; it sits flat and it's small on the inside. I don't even notice it, opposed to the chunk of metal I usually keep tucked away up there.

I'd like to start making more nose rings and start selling them but I'm afraid with a lack of experience I won't be able to know exactly what people are looking for. That's where you come in.

If you have your nose pierced I'm asking you to 'test drive' a stud I'll make specifically for you out of sterling silver wire. Wear it for a week and fill out a questionnaire helping me identify what I should change or what you like about it and if you would continue to wear it. (Yes, of course you'll be keeping it. Yes, it's free!)

You get to choose:

- Either 20 gauge or 18 gauge sterling silver wire. (18 is usually standard for nose rings but I've stepped mine down to 20 gauge -which is thinner.)

- If you want the stud to have a matte finish, polished to a shine or oxidized to a black.

When I went to New Paltz I stumbled upon this adorable artist co-op; I immediately fell in love.

With so many things to look at, I was overwhelmed at first. The people there were super friendly and I had to go back again the very next day just to see everything and to take it all in. (&of course I had to take my camera along the second time!)

They have a wide variety of items from framed leaf silhouettes to ceramics, cutting boards to cast silver jewelry, glass vases to handmade soap. They have blackboard wall paint, antique paintings and a little library of seeds to activate creativity.

It's a small place but it's super cute and well curated. If you're in the area or just passing by I suggest you stop in; I know you'll just love this place!

Apple Picking

Yesterday, I went apple picking for the first time ever with Sean! Growing up on the island there isn't anywhere close to go apple picking - those who did usually went upstate. When I lived upstate I would go to the local farms for apples but I never actually went picking. This weekend we went on to LivingSocial to see what the fuss was about; Chapin Orchards was offering $10 apple picking for a half bushel and a half gallon of cider. It turns out we were going to be passing by the orchards the very next day on the way to the Underhill harvest market - so of course we jumped on the wagon and went apple picking!

It wasn't as glorious as I had imagined, but it was a fun activity. I really like doing things that are season specific and will be looking forward to apple picking again next year. Today we looked up all kinds of apple recipes and we're going to be making an apple cobbler tonight! mmm. Times like these I wish our kitchen wasn't so new. I love old lived-in kitchens with brick or wood and natural sunlight pouring in. (We live in a new apartment building and unfortunately there are no windows in our kitchen.) I might not be able to take a video as romantic as the one in my previous post but if the cobbler comes out good I will definitely post the recipe!

These days are feeling more and more like autumn. And it's not just because of how cold it's been in the morning but because of the nostalgic feelings that fill my heart. It's the dry air, indoor cooking and warm optimism that autumn brings that makes my soul happy. The foliage and cool weather before our six months of frost. Going to New Paltz heightened that feeling even though I only lived there for two fall semesters. Something about knowing you could go apple picking less than a mile away that makes it really feel like the season is setting in. Ah, autumn, how I've missed you.

About Us

I wrote up a small about us for the Art Hop:

LoveErica was started in 2009 by me, Erica Fkiaras, when I was a freshman in college. While making art in high school I would sign the backs of my work with "Love, Erica" as gifts to close friends and family. When I was a Freshman in college I began selling my photography prints online; I stuck with the name LoveErica because I still felt the intimate connection with my art.

In the Spring of 2010 I took a metalsmithing class and started experimenting with the art of jewelry in a small makeshift studio at my parent's basement. Last Summer I followed my heart and moved from Long Island, New York to Burlington, VT. Although I continued to assemble and sell basic jewelry, I no longer had a studio, so I had to put my metalsmith work on hold for almost a year. This past June my partner, Sean Arsenault, joined me in LoveErica. Now we have a small silver studio where Sean has made most of the rings you see today. We are a team of ambitious college students; Sean is studying Mechanical Engineering & I'm studying Philosophy. We're having a lot of fun with our jewelry and hope you enjoy it as well.

First Craft Fair - What I learned

1. Do Your Homework

Do research on the craft fairs you want to apply to.

Will your target audience be there?
This question is a huge one. It doesn't matter how prepared you are or if your booth looks great - if the people there aren't your target audience you won't see many sales. See what kinds of people the craft fair is expecting. If you only have a 6 foot table plan accordingly. Knowing who will be there will help you cut down your work to fit on a small table.

Find out what is expected of you
I applied to the Art Hop knowing almost nothing about it. The application process told me to pick between the craft fair, the juried show and the fashion show. I picked only the craft fair and paid $50 to reserve my spot. It never told me what they expected of me (only that they'll contact me when time gets closer) and I didn't ask because I applied last minute. (Do yourself a favor and try to be at least a week ahead of the game - if you're anything like me this might be a struggle but it will make your life much easier.) Two weeks before the craft fair I found out I needed to supply my own table, chairs AND tent. Researching and $100 later I'm finally set with my structure and less room in my closet.

Find out how the show is being promoted
I tried to do one craft fair over a year ago and the promoter didn't do sh*t so no one showed up to the craft fair! No one sold a single thing. No one. She then disappeared and turned off her cell phone - very professional. This year the art hop was mentioned throughout town, everyone was talking about it. However, no one was talking about the craft fair part. And we were isolated, at least a good few blocks away from the really fun stuff. Make sure your craft fair is being accurately promoted.

Will you be accepting credit cards?
I was running around a few nights before the show trying to find a way to accept credit cards. Most apps I found for my smart phone were pricey and it seemed like they were all kinda difficult to set up. So I asked my friend Lisa for help- she suggested Square. They take a small percentage similar to paypal. Here's the cool part: they send you a card reader for free! You can take a picture of what you're selling if you want to include it, you swipe the card (did I mention they include a professional sticker that says Square and the credit cards you can accept? Awesome!) get the buyer to sign (and add optional tips,) and you can email or mms them a receipt. Very professional. Do yourself a favor and sign up with them now, it takes a week to receive your card reader and it's something that's good to keep in your cash box - one less thing to worry about when you're getting ready for your craft fair.

2. Set Goals
Make a list a goals you want to accomplish by a certain date

How much do you need to sell in order to pay for your time there?

Sit down at least a month before the show and ask yourself how much inventory you want to have and include what you'll need as packaging. Remember how much you'll need to sell in order to break even and make sure you have enough variety to do that AND much more. (Aim high!)

What about the people who can't purchase right now?

This was something I thought about but didn't have time to get to. A mailing list people can sign to stay connected. Think about business cards and coupon codes people can use in your online store for a limited time. Try to get people involved with staying connected; everyone has potential to be a buyer.

3. Set Up in Your House

With a table the appropriate size set up a similar structure in your house at least a week before the craft fair.

Plan out what you want your booth to look like

Incorporate things from your life to give it the look you want. I personally don't like it when people have industrial looking displays. If what you're selling is handmade have displays that match. Try to make it fun and show personality. If you give yourself enough time, you'll be able to tweak your display every time you pass it and even get your friends' opinion on it.

Get creative with it

I haven't put up photos yet of my booth but as a college student mine was very make shift because I couldn't afford to put in extra money. For a table cloth (I had two tables at this last show) I used curtains from my guest room. That's right, window curtains. And to mask the curtain look, I put lacy sheers on top - again window sheers. The look was romantic and delicate. To prop up earrings on the table I got two small drawers from my antique dresser and flipped them upside down to put things on top as a display. As it got windy my partner went to the local super market and bought black rice (forbidden rice) and we turned the dresser drawers the correct way, filled them with rice and had a new look that would prevent my items from blowing away. Think about the environment you'll be vending in. If you're outside think of the weather elements you might encounter and how you could change your plan last minute.

Find a way to be interactive

I personally don't like the act of selling. I would much greet people when they come to browse, keep busy with my own thing but still be there if they had any questions. I made necklaces while I was there and Sean made packaging with wax seals. We had a display of big cocktail rings (some were rather flashy) in a few bowls of black rice. Although none of them sold almost every woman (and girl) passing by stopped and tried them on (some men did too!) If we didn't have them out I'm pretty confident those people wouldn't have stayed nearly as long. Instead they were interacting directly with my items and stayed to talk to me/ask me questions while they browsed. Many of them took business cards after. I also brought some LoveErica stickers with me that I offered the kids who came by with their moms.

Answer FAQ

I spent time making a little "About Us" sign for our table. Not many people read it, but some people did. Include prices and signs that answer general questions. If I could go back I would have a sign next to my earrings that read, "These studs are made with surgical steel - that means they're hypoallergenic and perfect for those sensitive ears."A quote taken directly from my listings that I didn't think to include in my display.

4. Make Structures and Add Limits

Running a business requires structures and boundaries - if you're anything like me this might be the hardest part.

Keep Track of Inventory

Use excel or numbers to create inventory charts: they should include the name (description if the name isn't obvious,) price and quantity. Until recently I never viewed my etsy shop as a business. I wasn't structured and I could tell you all my inventory by heart - there wasn't ever a need to write things down. Well, let me tell you something: etsy is a business. If you're making money (or losing money!) it's a business and you should write things down. I found this particularly helpful when I was at the craft fair for 8+ hours. If I wanted to get up for anything, I felt confident leaving my partner there to answer questions and sell items at the appropriate price. With a quick glance you'll know how many items you have on hand - this is also a great tool to have at the studio when you're listing items on your online store or when you need to order supplies.

Set Limits

You should know when to stop when it comes to making inventory or staying up all night. I didn't. Being a perfectionist when it comes to my business, I know there's always room for improvement. Usually I say that you should constantly be changing and adapting; your business should never plateau. With that being said it was hard for me to stop making items the night before. It was hard to stop critiquing. I got one hour of sleep, at most. When, in reality all the work I did in that last minute didn't really matter. It would have been more beneficial for me to get rest.

5. Be Creative &Have fun

Try to see the bright side even if things aren't going your way

Use the fair as a place to network

Even though I think the day was rather unsuccessful for me I went around to almost every vendor (there wasn't many of us) and introduced myself. I talked to each person and took a picture of everyone's booth (I'll be posting them here when I have time to go through my photos) and plan on starting a Burlington Etsy Team with some of the people I met.

Remember you learn more from failure

Think of the craft fair as a learning experience. Incorporate what was successful into your online store and bring the rest back to the drawing board and figure out how to make them better. Remember every experience is a learning experience!

From Quebec City last weekend.

Sean is off in New Hampshire - climbing with his brother so I'm taking it easy today. I really wanted to get started on my big cartel shop but it looks like I don't know enough about web design to make it look decent and I really don't like the only template they provide you with.

I like the images that size but cant seem to spread them out more. Right now they are squished in a small frame - leaving an excessive white space on both sides. I wanted to take a class in web design locally but not through a college and it seems that no place here really offers exactly what I'm looking for. So I've decided to go buy one of those learn-it-yourself books this week and start reading! Maybe I'm being a bit unrealistically optimistic but sometimes I need that in my life.

Today I will be researching the metaphysics of crystals/gemstones (it will help me decide what kinds of stones to order for new rings) and making as many earrings as possible. The art hop is this Saturday and I'm still unsure if I will be vending due to the fact I still can't find a tent or a table; but I still want to be prepared.

Sean has been so hard at work making rings that we're almost all out of supplies. I have to reorder more this weekend so we can keep it up! I love the habits we've formed - working on making new items a little bit everyday. It's hard to keep up with Sean; I've been busy taking new photos everyday, I haven't even had a chance to go through all the ones from Quebec and now I'm only showing you a few from this week. I really need to sit down and go through all of them.

I love having too much work, work like this at least. It is thrilling. I'm so excited about all of this. I'm starting my class next week: Small Business Management. Awesome, huh? I might start posting here about the things I'm learning in class. It might be a fun way to study and share with you guys. We'll see.

The photo above was taken in Quebec last Saturday. I LOVE old things, especially doors and things made with real wood - beautiful!

Right now I'm lying down on the futon in our living room (we have three beds in our apt - one in every room, which is convenient when one of us doesn't feel good and the other is doing something: like right now. Sean is making rings and well, I'm doing the other stuff. That's kinda how my business is going; it's more of a joint shop where he does the production and I do everything else: run the blogs, twitter, all the photography, listings, everything in involved with etsy, advertising and selling. It's great this way. He loves building things but doesn't know how to talk to people and I'm not so productive but have great ideas and love talking and discussing things. Good team, huh?

Anyway, that brings me to my next idea: I want to do a photo series on both him and I and our personalities. I want to aim high and say 15 photos of each of us - 30 total. Even though I've been writing on this blog for a few years now (it's so weird to say that considering I've only been really comfortable writing in it during the past year or so) I don't think I've ever properly introduced myself. So this might be a good way to do it!

After debating it for some time I've come to the conclusion that I need a Big Cartel shop so I'm off to start making one now!

Bartlett Falls

Last week while Brian was visiting we drove down to Bristol, Vermont to the Bartlett falls. Sean and I came here a few months ago (remember this sarcastic post Sean wrote?) and thought it would be a fun place to go with Brian - who hasn't seen much of Vermont. As soon as we got there Sean went running toward the rocks because he loves climbing. Brian ventured out too and I stayed behind taking pictures from the cliff.

Sean abandoned his shoes early - if you're taking a walk with him around the block he'll usually find some shrub to hide his flip flops under. He rarely wears shoes outside.

So being the expert climber (this guy's used to big mountains!) Sean carried Brian's shoes.

The only way for them to go forward - that water was COLD and neither of them were prepared. At this point Sean left his shirt and went in with his athletic shorts. Brian followed leaving everything but his jeans (which isn't the best swimwear.)

I'm not really prepared with photos for a new blog post so you should enjoy these pictures of this farm cat, Fanta (Shelburne Farms,) because she's really cute. At the 'petting zoo' area of the farm I found her napping under a bush but as soon as we approached she came to say hello to us; so naturally I picked her up and carried her around for a little while (anyone who knows me knows this isn't uncommon for me.) She was the sweetest.

This is one of the rings Sean and I made last night; probably the most successful. I only had a limited knowledge of silversmithing when we both started working together (he didn't have any) so we're running into some problems along the way. -Which is great because it means we are learning on how to make our rings better but right now it's a bit frustrating. Anyway, I LOVE this ring that Sean made. I had picked out this piece of turquoise at a gemstone fair here in Burlington. We only came home with 5 stones and this was my favorite. This ring was supposed to be a size 6.5 but when we were done it ended up a bit bigger, but not quite a 7. It's about a 6 3/4s.

Anyway, Sean had another day of summer today due to Hurricane Irene so we decided to stay up all night and work. I had applied to the BUST Craftacular in Queens, NY and I was accepted! But it's the weekend after the Art Hop (Burlington, VT) and I just didn't know if I would have enough unique pieces for it (it's in 3 weeks!) So we stayed up trying to make a bunch of rings and in the end decided that it just isn't enough time. Oh well, we tried and we know our limits. I'm glad I applied and hope to do a craft fair with them in the spring! (I guess I should take it easy with the craft fairs and see how the two go this semester, since I've never really done them before and am not prepared!)

This week is dedicated to taking it easy, starting school, making rings when we feel like it and MAYBE opening another shop (outside etsy) for custom rings. Yay!

New Rings! I wish I had more time to sit down and write. I have been so busy! I just found out my best friends who live in my building are moving away, and too soon. My best friend from NY is coming to stay with me for a week starting in a few days and then Sean's coming back home this weekend with his brother. Ah. So I have two craft fairs in a month, don't have anything made for them (since most of my items are made to order) and before then I have to help two friends move, be a good host AND start school. I don't know how I'm going to handle this but I'm trying to stay calm about it. If you don't hear from me - this is why.

I know this is a controversial topic, but immediately when I read this response I felt justice through honest sadness. These are the words that people turn their backs to; the side no one wants to talk about because they're not pretty and beautiful. The ones that make you squirm, close your eyes and pretend that if you don't acknowledge them then the sad truths will also disappear. That's why I'm posting this, because I think more people need to open their eyes before they open their mouths.

Let me tell you some things.

I used to investigate child abuse and neglect. I can tell you how to stop the vast majority of abortion in the world.

First, make knowledge and access to contraception widely available. Start teaching kids before they hit puberty. Teach them about domestic violence and coercion, and teach them not to coerce and rape. Create a strong, loving community where women and girls feel safe and supported in times of need. Because guess what? They aren’t. You know what happens to babies born under such circumstances? They get hurt, unnecessarily. They get sick, unnecessarily. They get removed from parents who love them but who are unprepared for the burden of a child. Resources? Honey, we try. There aren’t enough resources anywhere. There are waiting lists, and promises, and maybes. If the government itself can’t hook people up, what makes you think an impoverished single mom can handle it?

Abolish poverty. Do you have any idea how much childcare costs? Daycare can cost as much or more than monthly rent. They may be inadequately staffed. Getting a private nanny is a nice idea, but they don’t come cheap either. Relatives? Do they own a car? Does the bus run at the right times? Do they have jobs of their own they need to work just to keep the lights on? Are they going to stick around until you get off you convenience store shift at 4 AM? Do they have criminal histories that will make them unsuitable as caregivers when CPS pokes around? You gonna pay for that? Who’s going to pay for that?

End rape. I know your type errs on the side of blaming the woman, but I’ve seen little girls who’ve barely gotten their periods pregnant because somebody thought raping preteens was an awesome idea. You want to put a child through that? Or someone with a mental or physical inability for whom pregnancy would be frightening, painful or even life-threatening? I’ve seen nonverbal kids who had their feet sliced up by caregivers for no fucking reason at all, you think sexual abuse doesn’t happen either?

You say there’s lots of couples who want to adopt. Kiddo, what they want to adopt are healthy white babies, preferably untainted by the wombs and genetics of women with alcohol or drug dependencies. I’ve seen the kids they don’t want, who almost no one wants. You people focus only on the happy pink babies, the gigglers, the ones who grow and grow with no trouble. Those are not the kids who linger in foster care. Those are certainly not the older kids and teenagers who age out of foster care and then are thrown out in the streets, usually with an array of medical and mental health issues. Are they too old to count?

And yeah, I’ve seen the babies, little hand-sized things barely clinging to life. There’s no glory, no wonder there. There is no wonder in a pregnant woman with five dollars to her name, so deep in depression you wonder if she’ll be alive in a week. Therapy costs money. Medicine costs money. Food, clothes, electricity cost money. Government assistance is a pittance; poverty drives women and girls into situations where they are forced to rely on people who abuse them to survive. (I’ve been up in more hospitals than I can count.)

In each and every dark pit of desperation, I have never seen a pro-lifer. I ain’t never seen them babysitting, scrubbing floors, bringing over goods, handing mom $50 bucks a month or driving her to the pediatrician. I ain’t never seen them sitting up for hours with an autistic child who screams and rages so his mother can get some sleep while she rests up from working 14-hour days. I don’t see them fixing leaks in rundown houses or playing with a kid while the police prepare to interview her about her sexual abuse. They’re not paying for the funerals of babies and children who died after birth, when they truly do become independent organisms. And the crazy thing is they think they’ve already done their job, because the child was born!

Aphids give birth, girl. It’s no miracle. You want to speak for the weak? Get off your high horse and get your hands dirty helping the poor, the isolated, the ill and mentally ill women and mothers and their children who already breathe the dirty air. You are doing nothing, absolutely nothing, for children. You don’t have a flea’s comprehension of injustice. You are not doing shit for life until you get in there and fight that darkness. Until you understand that abortion is salvation in a world like ours. Does that sound too hard? Do you really think suffering post-birth is more permissible, less worthy of outrage?

“Pro-life” is simply a philosophy in which the only life worth saving is the one that can be saved by punishing a woman.

Gold filled bracelets!

I know, I know, I said I would take better pictures but haven't had the time. But aren't these gold filled bracelets so pretty? I just had to make one for myself. I can't wait to get better pictures up and list them on etsy. As of right now I have only a limited supply so I'll have to see how that goes.

Sean is officially done with summer classes so we've been spending time together and rearranging our little apartment. Not just little rearranging either. Big stuff, carrying the furniture around etc. We are basically integrating our stuff, so instead of his room, my room and the living room we now have our joint room, a storage/guest room and a makeshift jewelry studio (which now has a new desk!) Which involved carrying my dresser out to his room, putting all his 'extra' stuff into my closet, cutting my clothes in half so they would fit into a half closet (since he had the master bedroom he had the his and her closets - which we are now taking advantage of!) Donating clothes to goodwill and sending the clothes that don't fit me anymore to a good friend. The biggest problem for me is the constant battle between aesthetics and practicality. I usually am willing to go out of my way if a space is more aesthetically pleasing to me but in this scenario practicality prevailed. I hated the idea of removing my old antique wooden dresser from my room, since I saw it as a focal point but I did it anyway. Oh, the things I do for him.. Speaking of which, we've been together almost 4 months. I feel like we're practically married. Sometimes I think I'm crazy and other times I'm glad I took the dive.

So now I want to get everything together and reorganized (everything needs new homes now, it's kinda like moving again, just not as intense.) &Take pictures to show you the final result! Sean leaves on Thursday because he's doing the bike part to a relay triathlon down in Virginia. So right now my main priority is spending time with him, but come Thursday you'll definitely be getting pictures from me.

So much to do, so little summer.

Even though summer is coming to an end for most college students, this is Sean's last week of classes so we're going to try to live it up before September. We're pretty much homebodies and when we do go out we're usually low key, and a bit antisocial. We enjoy our time together and being isolated from large groups. While looking at this picture I realized I should make a list of the things I'd like to do before school starts like go to Maine, find some little swimming holes, waterfalls, etc. Things that are very New England. I want to take advantage of my surroundings. Make the most of it. I don't know where I'll be in a year or two but as of right now I'm here so I should embrace it in full.

On Sunday Sean and I took a walk down to Lake Champlain, we ended up going up by the rocky part, rather than the beach because we had the little dog with us. We didn't stay long because it was sunny and too hot and Jackson didn't really want to go near the water. But I did take a few photos before we left!

Yesterday we went to the local farmers market because I wanted to get a few ideas on how to set up my display at the art hop in September. It was a dud. I was totally uninspired. This was the most interesting display - which was great for veggies. The jewelry there was rather dull, and it was so hot that were only a few buyers walking around. I felt bad for the people working. I'm starting to dread the art hop.

Here's the real problem: There's another craft fair in November (which I know is a good time considering the holidays, etc...) in Massachusetts. Lisa from EllePaisley said Sean and I could spend the night at her place, and she would be my support. But to sign up it's $200 and the deadline is this week. It's a lot of money considering I just invested all that money last week. I just haven't had enough experience doing craft fairs to know if it's worth it. Apart of me is telling me to make the dive and the other part thinks maybe selling online is the best for me. I'm torn. I guess I should just keep researching and doing my homework before I make a decision.

So, I've recently dropped a good investment with hopes to revive my business. I want to push it in more of a handmade direction rather than just assembling. With the support of my boyfriend, and soon to be business partner, I made a leap and invested some money that I should have been saving, with hopes I can make it all back and then some by the holidays (and no, I don't believe I am too ambitious.)

Anyway, I gambled and bought supplies online. Which is fun once you actually decide what you want, tracking the shipments and knowing I have big packages coming everyday for the next week. But opening every envelope is like opening a new deck of pokemon cards: you always kinda know what you're in for but you're still hoping you got really lucky.

So far I love these druzies. I can't wait to set them in some nice cocktail rings: I just need to make sure I teach Sean more about silversmithing before he gets his hands on these:

& these beautiful gold plated beads. They're super tiny and pretty expensive but I just love the way they reflect light.

I want to bring my shop in a new raw yet polished look. I want to work with more gold.

Yesterday, on our way to the store we saw signs for a "Gem and Mineral show" so we stopped by to see what it was all about. We were there for over an hour looking at and learning about stones.

We came home with these 4 cabochons that will also be made into rings:

So I finally did it: I signed up for a craft fair.

Remember last June when I did my first craft fair? That was a joke. I split a table with my friend Genna and no one showed up. We live on a goddamn island - if you don't promote the show everyone will be at the beach. Anyway, no one showed up, no one sold anything. Of course I lost money, sleep, supplies, and self confidence when it came to craft fairs. Swore them off. Plus I'm not so nice in hot weather: it's probably best that I can do the customer service work from inside in the AC. Okay, okay, I'm not that hostile. I just don't know what to say. I HATE when people put me on the spot - I wouldn't want to convince anyone to buy my work. I'd probably just sit with my mouth closed until they approach me. Not to mention I have a hard time accepting money from people I connect to.

Last summer I attended a craft fair the first week I moved to Vermont; that's where I met Lisa from Elle Paisley. I caught only the last end of the fair (I'm always late - it's usually intentional. Less people that way.) But there were still potential buyers wandering around. This year I signed up for the same craft fair: the Art Hop. It's in a month and a half and I'm kinda freaking out. I don't really know what I need. I don't want to go crazy because there's a chance this will be my last craft fair if it doesn't go well. I want to be a minimalist but still have a cute table. So I've been looking online:

Anyway, I've been thinking about what I need before I can do a craft fair. I think every week or so I should set up what a little mock table so I have an idea of what I'm working with &what I need to get in order to have a cute table.

Sometimes I pick wildflowers by the construction site near my house and I definitely think I should bring a small bunch for my table:

Another piece I bought for the fair last year. It spins so it's kinda fun. To be honest, I hate this thing. It is a pain in the butt to put post earrings on (It's much more convenient for hook earrings.) Even though it's a pain, I still use it because it hold so many earrings in one place. If you put the backs on you can just carry it without worrying about earrings falling off: perfect for a craft show.

A few shadowboxes that I got from the local TJ Maxx - they're on the wall now, but I'll take them down for the show.

I don't want to get a table cloth but I don't want to use a bare table either. Maybe I can find some cute linens or something. We'll see.

Now I've been thinking about my items. I don't know what to bring. A lot of my items are made-to-order but that doesn't work the same way for craft fairs as it does online. So I've been thinking about what products to make and how many. Right now I'm only selling 6mm and 8mm earrings and sterling silver necklaces with charms - something that I'm trying to phase out.

If I do a craft fair I have to have a wide variety of items: earrings: posts &dangle, bracelets, necklaces, rings: simple &stone. Sterling silver AND gold filled, vermeil, etc. I should have a nice range. But why haven't I been applying that idea to my online shop front? I guess it's like how I viewed my photo class last semester. I didn't really learn anything new but the deadlines pushed me to shoot more things and actually finish the ideas I have in my head. (I'm brilliant at brainstorming but really bad at translating it to material things.) It's all gotta be cohesive of course. I was planning on investing some money into my business this month anyway - so I should be planning this show in September at the same time.

I've been thinking about getting this work bench. Now, I know it's not the fanciest but I just want something to work on with some storage. Sean thinks it's a waste of money of course; "We could make something like that." But I don't want to wait to make something before I can work. And let's face it: we live in a small apartment. We don't have the space or tools to make things like that. We don't have a garage to work in.

Cardboard. That's his answer, cardboard. We can make everything out of cardboard and it would be perfect because it would be customized dimensions &if our craft changes we can throw it out and make new ones. But I have a problem with that for a few reasons. I want to start working as soon as I get back to Vermont from New York next week. He's going to Philly and biking in a triathlon in less than a month then he starts school. I don't want to build something by myself and I don't want to rely on him to start new projects. I just want to get started.

Not to mention I want us to be more professional. If I want to be more serious about my business I need to work in a more professional environment. If my whole work studio is made of cardboard I think that would affect the way we view the business - even outside of our makeshift studio. Even if we're scrapping together I want to feel like even though we're a small business, we're professional, and cute, and doing what we can.

Here I am again, back in New York. I closed the shop again temporarily - until August. This summer has been so busy I haven't had a chance to settle down anywhere. I've been making big plans for the new items. I've been making lists to see exactly what I need in order to make a new shop with metalsmithed jewelry &I've realized that I can't afford that kind of budget right now. I'd rather take it in steps. So when I return to Vermont I will be adding new rings to LoveErica. Sean and I will be working on our craftsmanship and if all goes well we will open a shop in the future.

So, with that being said here is a ring Sean made with amethyst:

It is for my mom's birthday. We LOVE it and hope to be carrying them in the shop!

So about a week ago when I posted my last update I bought these really gorgeous stones. The first three arrived yesterday and I was so excited to work with them that I dragged out all my silversmithing supplies that have been stowed away for about a year now.

As soon as I got started making a ring Sean was asking questions and making suggestions on how I could make bezels without having to use glue since the stones are taller than the bezel wire. Naturally, while I was soldering and figuring out how I'm going to make a ring with the scrap silver on hand (which wasn't big enough to cover the whole bottom of the stone) Sean was busy grinding the stone down.

Eventually we made a beautiful ring without a fancy studio.

I adore it. I made it to fit my pointer finger because I plan on wearing it day and night and seeing if any problems arise so we can address them before we make them to sell.

While we were going to sleep Sean kept asking how many more stones I have like that. Turns out he wants to start making jewelry too. What you guys probably don't know is Sean took a basic jewelry class years ago and realized yesterday how much he enjoys it. So, we decided to open a joint jewelry shop together (and if we're successful he won't be opening a ceramic shop - that will just stay a hobby.) Our shop won't carry any of the surgical steel earrings or the charm necklaces that I sell in LoveErica. It's going to be more high end (only silver and gold) 100% handmade. We want it to be elegant but raw. Pretty stones with a rough edge. We still need a name for our shop (any suggestions?) and need to throw down some $$ for a few more essential tools ( since we can't afford a real studio right now.) We hope to have it up and running by September! I am super excited about this and can't wait to watch it unfold.

I hope you had a great 4th of July!

Things have been sorta crazy around here. Since I last wrote I pulled myself together and started working. Being around someone as creative as Sean has inspired me to actually create rather than thinking about creating. I bought new supplies because I finally thought of a new direction I want to take my shop in. I'm learning how to gold plate pieces and hope to add some vermeil to my shop next week!

Did I mention that we're going to open a shop for Sean within the next few weeks? We're just waiting for the studio to fire everything in the kiln and do a glaze firing. We have been brainstorming for a while now and he came up with a name today: HighFireCeramics. I'm really excited for him to be selling his pieces.

On Saturday we went to Montreal and had a great time. It's so nice to be able to take a road trip to Montreal without having to stay the night. They have international firework competitions throughout the month of July and we caught the end of the Czech Republic's show. We had spent most of the time running down hill across the city to make it to the water front. We're planning on trying to make it back there this weekend to see England's fireworks and we'll definitely plan it better this time.

In other news, I've been hanging up some decor around the apartment so it'll feel more like home. My Urban Outfitter curtains arrived this week and I think they brighten the room, now I just need some thicker curtains that'll block the light completely.

Getting settled in a new place does take some time - at least for me since I have a lot more things than the average college student. I totally underestimated how long it would take to get settled. I've been trying hard to add little touches around but still have a few more boxes that need to be unpacked (and no place to put the things in them.)

And I finally reopened the etsy shop and it feels SO GOOD to be back in business! I already have a handful of orders that I have to pack up once I finish this blog post. I made a Tumblr specifically for my etsy shop and am looking for some followers to get it started: LoveEricaJewelry. There I'll be posting pictures of new jewelry and the OOAK pieces when I list them. Oh, have you seen the new ankle bracelet I made? It's listed in the shop of course.

I don't know what to say here anymore. My emotional ways have forced me to cut ties with those who I was close to because I always get too involved. I am learning and growing (in my own way of course) and trying to find a good healthy balance for me. These past few days have been quite a roller coaster when my mom tried to visit Sean &I in our new apartment. Needless to say, it didn't end well. And somewhere my sulking resulted in accidentally breaking my new macbook screen (the glass - not the lcd screen, but I'm still devastated.)

I'm trying to pull it together. I really need to finish unpacking the rest of my boxes (because Im dying for this apartment to feel like home!) &I'm still pretty much unemployed as long as my etsy shop is closed. Sometimes it all feels overwhelming. I am trying to stay optimistic and take things one step at a time. I need to remember to breath and handle things at my own pace. It doesn't matter if someone else could handle it differently or faster. I need to take care of myself.

P.S. After writing this I realized that a month or so ago I had a dream that I broke my laptop and the only thing I could think of when I woke up was I need to buy a hard case for it. But then when I looked up how much they cost I hesitated and couldn't pick one and never got around to it. Strange how that works.

Yesterday, Glicia arrived here in NY from Brazil. She was my mom's best friend growing up and I haven't seen her in 5 years or so. It was so nice to see her, even just for a day - and she &my mom might come visit me up in VT in a week.

Today I'm going to pack up all my stuff and head back to Burlington! It's always hard leaving New York but this time there's a new apartment and a wonderful guy waiting for me. Once I get there and settle in I will revamp my shop! But I will write more about the shop later.

Since my 35mm broke while I was in high school, Sean's parent's have been kind enough to lend me theirs along with all the lenses they've accumulated. It was super nice of them and I have to go pick up the first roll I've shot with it this afternoon. I just realized that if I were to take a frame a day (film) it would be under $100 per year - including developing the film (not the prints - I would scan the negatives into my comp & just get prints of my faves.) So after seeing how my film turns out I might vow to do that. Two photos a day: one digital and one traditional. I will keep you guys updated!

June 9th; the unexpected challenge

Yesterday Jessie and I went out to Garden City to get a few rolls of film developed. She recently got the Spinner Camera (for her graduation!) It takes panoramic photos like this:

The negatives look really cool - now she just needs to figure out a way to print them (or maybe she should get positive film next time!)

Anyway, so we're driving home and we're stopped at a red light for a few minutes or so. Then we got hit. We got hit hard considering we had been waiting at a red light with a line of people behind us. Initially neither of us knew what happened. When we finally realized (it only took a few seconds but it seemed like longer) we got out of the car (we were in the middle lane of traffic and by this point the light turned green and cars on both sides were starting to go. The guy in the SUV behind us started screaming that it was a small blue car driving away. I got both of their license plates without even thinking. Jessie was really upset when she saw how messed up her little car was: as college students we can't afford fixing cars - her car was like a '96. Immediately people from the gas station we were in front of told both us and the man behind us to pull over after making sure Jessie &I were okay.

The man driving the SUV, Kenneth (age 23) tried to calm Jess and I down explaining it wasn't a big deal and we should just exchange information and be on our way; "What, is this your first car accident?!" Yes, Kenneth, we're not as experienced as you when it comes to accidents and yet we still know we should get a police report.

The cops arrived almost immediately after I hung up the phone with the precinct. When talking to the cops Kenneth's story changed to he wasn't even paying attention. We were both stopped, he wasn't looking &thought he saw cars moving around him so he floored it. He didn't necessarily say he floored it but he hit us really hard considering we were both stopped. The metal in the saturn's bumper is dented a good 7 inches - it didn't stand a chance with his 2010 SUV. Of course his car barely has any damage done - he was anxious to leave and tried squirming out of the situation and trying to get us to just contact him later.

After getting things squared away Kenneth tried making small talk with us including getting both our names and numbers. After all, we're two pretty ladies in summer dresses and we both handled the situation calmly and professionally. He told us both that we have our head on our shoulders and that we'd be successful. Sorry Kenneth, we don't wanna waste a moment talking to you after you lied. Next time own up! (and watch the road please!)

Both mine and Jessie's head hurt us all day and we thought about going to the hospital to get checked out but eventually decided to take painkillers and see how we feel the next few days. I'm just glad everyone's okay and it wasn't mine or Jessie's fault. I have to admit, because we were both okay I'm sure thankful that I was with Jess. I wouldn't want her to go through that, but if I had to be with anyone I'm glad it was her. She kept saying that she would have flipped out if she was by herself. I don't really know if things happen for a reason, and I don't want to think they do, but I'm sure glad it was the both of us. I'm proud of us for handling the situation so well. We've both grown so much since we became best friends 10 years ago and I'm really proud of the people we've become

This week has been so busy!

On sunday my parents came home from their cruise - they had such a good time they're planning on going back to Bermuda next month!

Then I drove through the night to a town outside of Philadelphia where I stayed with Sean &his parents in the house he grew up in. It was gorgeous! I only got to stay for a day but it was a lot of fun and I hope I get to go back with him soon!

I probably have written about this on my blog before but I really have a bad habit of not taking my camera out in settings where I either feel really comfortable or when I'm trying to fully experience something. In new situations I often feel like a camera is obstructing my view: allowing me to only see things through a frame rather than with my own eyes. &To be honest I never really take my camera out at home. I wish I had so many more pictures with my family but the time never really seems appropriate for me to be taking pictures. Nothing's ever that special - which I guess is the point anyway; to document everyday life. Maybe I should try a picture a day thing. I went to Philly and the only few pictures I took were with a film camera - other than that all I have is this scrabble pic. Pretty lame, huh?

So this is a note to self: TAKE OUT YOUR CAMERA. Let's stick with something realistic and totally attainable: 20 shots per day. Even of a single object. (&Yes, I plan on posting every single one.) Let's see how long it takes before it become a routine.

Lately I've been thinking about opening another etsy shop. I have a lot of supplies from when I used to make brass/copper/plated necklaces. I've been thinking about opening a destash shop for all the wasted supplies that have been sitting in boxes in my parents basement (I need to step up my game when it comes to selling since my new apartment is going to cost me double what my other did!)

Looking back on the jewelry I used to sell I'm almost embarrassed by how I went about it. Since I sold these items I've learned a lot from technique to packaging to product photography. Maybe I should give it another try with my new knowledge and sell this kind of jewelry again before getting rid of the supplies. Or maybe I can sell supplies and more jewelry. I don't know. I just need to step up my game and try to make ends meet.

Today Jessie and I drove out to the Robert Moses beach (yes, like the serial killer.) I'm not really sure why we went to RM. I think Jessie wanted to go to the Fire Island Lighthouse. It was a nice day; not too hot, not too cold. Not swimsuit weather but comfortable beach weather. No one went into the water. It touched our toes and both J &I screamed. We set up our tripod to take some pictures together and sand kept blowing in our eyes and our hair was all on one side. You can't see our faces in most of the shots (it's all hair!) but we did have a lot of fun like we used to when I lived here.

Jessie's been my best friend since I was in the 6th grade; we used to be inseparable. It was always Erica and Jess or Jessie and Erica. Never one without the other. It's sad that we're so far away when I'm in Vermont but I know whatever happens she'll always be my best friend. We'll always have each other's back. That's why days like today are fun and we can hang out just like we used to. EJ days.

It's always funny for me to hear people taking week long trips to the beach. Growing up on an island I never had to think twice about going to the beach, it's at most a half hour away. I don't miss it much when I'm gone but there's something about Long Island that makes me proud - no matter how disgusted I am by it. Home, it's a weird thing like that.

It was killing him that I had those beakers in a box with packaging peanuts. I had bought about 10 of those vintage beakers with glass tops on ebay a few months ago. I had intended on using 3 or so for decor and selling the others but when Sean found them last night (it's not like he's going through my boxes or anything) he texted me asking where the glass stoppers were because he found a use for them. He already cleaned them out real well and is using them. I have to say, I love them in the kitchen on my silver plate. I already want to buy more sizes for different cooking oils.

He is so sweet. The video isn't the best quality and it kinda makes me dizzy but I think it's adorable. Of course everything's still in boxes and we're going to need to work on making it feel like home but it's a start. The last time I saw his apt all my stuff was piled in his bedroom like tetris. So, I somehow ended up back in Vermont. I made the trip last minute with Sean who's only staying up here for the few days he has class this week. We will be going back down to NY on Friday. Going back and forth has really made me realize that out of the two places Vermont is where I'd rather be living - which is great considering I just signed a new lease.

My great uncle Harry & aunt Mary

Today my Dad &I drove to Jersey to pick up our great uncle, Harry, to take him to the airport (he's going to Cyprus.) He and aunt Mary are super sweet and I'm glad I got to see them while I was home - I don't think I've seen them in over a year or so. They helped me buy my camera, the canon 60d and I'm extremely thankful. They are self sufficient and always make us delicious food; this time it was lentil soup and the delicious bread &olive oil (that's greek family for you.)

Some friends drown you in problems. Dilemmas you have to address in order to be a good friend. Somethings are unavoidable -and through those I promise to be faithful. But sometimes you're submerged in other people's problems. I don't want to deal with your issues if you run back to the source of them; you have a choice with every action you make. I do not want to see you feed off the negativity or blame me for doing the 'wrong thing' when you forced me to get involved in the first place. I have my own life to live and my own obstacles to address. I'm doing the best that I can. We all have hurdles, it's not about how high you jump but how you strategize.

And if you're one of those people who get sucked into these problems don't feel like you owe anyone anything. You don't have to look for a good excuse after someone put you in a bad situation. You don't have to feel bad about letting someone down when it wasn't your place to keep them afloat. We all gave the option of saying no. If we could all just take care of ourselves then we wouldn't have to rely on other people. Everyone can be emotionally sustainable.

At this point in my life there are so many things changing. I'm embracing change but it's not always easy; I'm doing the best I can. I'm trying to not rely on others and not take anything too seriously. I think I'm doing a pretty damn good job! &I'm proud of that. Unfortunately that means I can't deal with other some of my friends problems because I'm too busy taking care of myself. But when I think about it, I'm okay with that.

So as most of you know I was pretty miserable in my apartment in Burlington, VT. Things with my roommate became really malicious and most of the time I wanted to be anywhere but home. So I put in my 60 days to move out &spent most of the last few weeks in Sean's apartment. It turns out that Jeremy, Sean's roommate, is moving out mid June. Which means Sean's looking for a new roommate the same week I need to move back to Burlington.

There was a long debate of whether or not it was the right decision for me to become Sean's new roommate. Although we've been good friends for months, we've only been dating for the past few weeks. Originally I had my heart set on living in a single apartment. Where I could have my own space to work on my jewelry and projects. If I wanted to have company over I could and I wouldn't have to work around someone else's schedule if I wanted time alone (which I really value.) I would be paying over double for rent but I figured if I had to I could make ends meet. The lease was only by month so if worse came to worse I could always move back to NY. I had my heart set on an apt building next to Kathy's house (which was also next to the Post Office - another plus!)

Sean's other option might be a bit more challenging - he keeps to himself and I think it might have been difficult to find a roommate who he would actually be compatible with in a short amount of time. Throwing another person into the mix now might be bad for our new relationship not to mention the new roommate would also have to get used to me being around a lot. If they don't get along then there's a good chance Sean would spend a lot of time at my apartment - which would defeat the purpose of me having my own place.

So I started to actually consider living with him. There's a lot of things I learned about myself since I started seeing him. Walls I've built, rules I made when it comes to relationships. I made a promise to myself that I wouldn't get serious with anyone until I was older. That I didn't want a serious relationship. That I wasn't ready to settle down in anyway. Sean's made me realize that I shouldn't overlook something great due to these made up rules; it's nothing that he's said directly. Just from things I've felt from being around him.

I love spending time with him. I really do. He adores me even when I'm being difficult and helps me grow in so many aspects of my life. He inspires me and pushes me to be the best person I can. From the get go he's been wanting a serious relationship. He wants to be committed and loyal and has been patient and supportive as I struggled in deciding if that's what I want in my life right now. If I moved into his apartment we'd only be locked in for 60 days, we'd each have our own bedroom (and bathroom.) We'd each have our own space which I think is extremely important. Overall the risks didn't seem to be that big (truth, maybe some of my family would have a problem with it but in this life I have to do what's right for me and I can't be living to make anyone else happy.) Right now he's where I feel good.

So last week he helped me pack up my whole room and everything else I had in the apartment. Since there was no more storage available in the city of Burlington (and since his apt was directly above mine) we moved every single thing I own into his small apartment. It took us until 5am because I'm the best procrastinator around. After we were finished, I went up to Sean with tears in my eyes asking if he was mad at me for leaving it for the last minute. I could tell he had grown impatient (since we had to be on the road for an 8+ hr car drive each in only a few hours) but instead he looked at me &kissed me on the forehead and told me he's just glad that my stuff was finally all moved in.

I swear I've never let anyone this close to my heart romantically for a long time and this is the very first time I'm actually okay with me getting serious with someone. I'd be honored if our relationship lasts; I think we balance each other well - I couldn't be happier with anyone else. It's like sometimes you feel like you're with someone because you moved to that location. &Sometimes you feel like you moved to that location so you could be with that someone. I still don't want to believe in fate or a higher being but man my life has been pushing me in strange places. &I'm not just saying this just because of Sean. (I guess I'll save all this for a later blog post since until this point I've kept my spiritual views out of my blog.)

On Friday I left my apartment for good and signed some papers for my new home upstairs. We drove two cars down New York stopping only for maple ice cream and in Middlebury, VT for sandwiches. Then we drove to New Paltz, NY where I went to college. I introduced Sean to some good friends of mine and we hung out and went for a walk in the nature preserve. At 10pm we hit the road again and this time Sean split and headed toward Philadelphia while I continued to Long Island. On Thursday he'll be joining me at my parent's home but until then I'm trying to get reoriented in New York.

There's so much more to say, but I really should get going now.

On the drive down to New York we stopped in Middlebury - a small town south of Burlington, VT. It's a town my dad &I used to stop in every time we were on our way to Burlington. It's a cute little place with a sweet waterfall. There's one store next to the river - you have to walk down these metal stairs suspended above the water to get to it. When you look down it feels like you're on a boat - it's a view of the river right before the falls. I usually end up stopping in the little shop, Belladonna, and this time around I was blown away by the design and decor. It looks absolutely beautiful inside. (Thanks Rachel for letting me take these pics!)

The past few months I've entertained the idea of taking more photos of local shops to build more of a commercial portfolio. When I take photos like this in passing I always feel a little out of place - there's usually other people in the shop and I don't really want to interrupt anyone or make anyone feel uncomfortable. But the truth is I LOVE taking photos and wish I felt more comfortable doing so in these types of settings. Here is a note to self to not worry as long as photography is permitted.

I've been a little overwhelmed by moving and it's taking some time even though I don't have THAT much stuff. Today we moved out my dresser and my two trunks. My closet is almost empty and there's a lot of little unorganized things left over. I'm making progress and hope to be all moved out by Thursday. I will be heading to New York for a month on Friday - so the shop will be closed until July or so. I'm planning on moving back to VT the 3rd week in June. I will continue to blog, but may not be able to as often as I have been.

Green Up Day with Yoga Vermont

Green up day is a statewide event held the first Saturday in May. It's been going on since 1970! The mission is to pick up trash &litter from the ground of our beautiful state: Vermont. The Green Up website says that about 15,000 people participate and 40,000 bags are collected annually. During the day we saw cars and trucks packed with bags of litter and old abandoned furniture. Green bags by the sides of the roads that would later be collected &people with bags in every trail, along every road. It was incredible - there was definitely a sense of unity among the community. Yoga Vermont asked me to join them and document their part:
